TeachBoston

The TeachBoston Pathway is an elective program offered to juniors and seniors that have a genuine interest in a teaching career. The program consists of both a class conducted at West Roxbury High School and shadowships or internships at local facilities providing children's services. These 'real world' experiences will give the TeachBoston participants a true linkage between their classroom instruction, the field of education and a promising career.

Two members of the West Roxbury High School staff act as facilitators for the enrollees as they are introduced to the career of teaching and investigate the ins and outs of the profession. This is a competency-based course aligned with the Citywide Learning Standards. The eleven School-to-Career competencies are integrated into the TeachBoston course curriculum:

  • Communicate and understand ideas and information
  • Collect, analyze, and organize information
  • Identify and solve problems
  • Understand and work within complex systems
  • Use mathematical ideas and techniques
  • Initiate and complete entire activities
  • Act professionally
  • Interact with others
  • Learn and teach on an ongoing basis
  • Take responsibility for career and life choices

This program seeks to have students become knowledgeable in presentation, listening, speaking, and observation skills as well as teaching strategies, lesson planning, and child growth and development. Two projects are assigned for each of the four marking terms and an exit portfolio is required to pass each course.
