To all students, parents, and educators:
The Boston Public School district has a history of developing exceptional and innovative curriculum projects that incorporate technology into the classroom. The Office of Instructional Technology works closely with teachers and curriculum departments to develop professional development programs and resources that are tailored to meet the needs of teachers and students across the district, in their subject area of need. Two years ago, OIT and the Secondary Math Department embarked on an ambitious project to align our middle school math curriculum to activities and resources available online. Today, the Office of Instructional Technology and the Secondary Math Department are proud to announce the World Wide Web debut of the SELECT Math Project: Supporting Engaged Learning by Enhancing Curriculum with Technology.
The goal of SELECT Math is to concurrently support student learning in both mathematics and in tech literacy with the use of online resources in the classroom. Staff members from both departments came together to form the SELECT Math Project, and this website showcases the result of their two years of work.
The SELECT Math website provides information about the project and contains links to over 100 online resources that can be used to support student learning with the Connected Math textbook series by Prentice Hall. The links are sorted by grade level and then by month and book name, as laid out in the Scope and Sequence Guide created by the Secondary Math Department. Each alignment matches an individual textbook lesson to a specific online activity and also suggests how to use the online activity within the course of a class lesson. Many of the alignments are also accompanied by worksheets that can be used with the applets in the classrooms for evaluating a student’s work with the online resource.
Please take the time to look over the resources available on the website; we believe you will find them useful for yourself and for your students. Information about our professional development programs is available under the heading “Workshops.” If you are interested in learning more about these resources, consider participating in one of our 15-hour workshops, which are currently being scheduled for this spring and summer. Use this website, along with MyBPS, to keep up-to-date with the project happenings throughout the school year.
Thank you for all your excellent work with our students. We look forward to hearing about your experiences using SELECT Math in your classroom.
Sincerely,
Ann Grady, Former Director of the Office of Instructional Technology, Boston Public Schools
Ed Joyce, Director of the Secondary Math Department, Boston Public Schools
