Academy of Management - East Boston High School

Program Description

This academy blends two nationally recognized programs: the National Academy Foundation (NAF) for Travel and Tourism and the National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE) to provide a rigorous curriculum and a range of connecting activities. An advisory board made up of leaders in the travel and tourism and business worlds helps to guide teachers, assists in curriculum development, provides individual feedback to students through in class coaching and mentoring and also provides financial and structural support.

Program Features / Opportunities for Hands-On Learning

Using the NFTE model, students develop and operate their own legitimate small business. They also compete in a city-wide business plan competition. Students also complete signature projects, which are cross-curricular, long-term projects in which students develop many of the school to career competencies and produce something useful and tangible to an outside audience. Students in this pathway also established and run East Boston's school store.

Academy of Health and Human Services - East Boston High School

Program Description

This academy brings together two pathways at East Boston High School with very strong links to the larger community. The Academy of Health and Human Services brings together the Health Careers and TEACHBoston pathways to create opportunities for students interested in health and education careers.

A partnership with Massachusetts General Hospital allows students looking for careers in health care to explore their options. Additionally, the pediatrics department is a perfect connection for students interested in preparing for a career working with children. The courses offered focus on Human Growth and Development, life skills, job readiness, and career development, as well as specific medical techniques and terminology and writing lesson plans.

Program Features / Opportunities for Hands-On Learning

The students in this academy have many options for applying their knowledge. All students receive CPR Training and Certification. They have the opportunity to do internships at elementary schools in East Boston or, through the partnership with Massachusetts General Hospital, to participate in rotations, tours, trainings and paid internships.
