Health Professions Pathway - Brighton High

Program Description:

What is the Health Professions Pathway
The School of Health Professions, initiated in 1990, is the first of Brighton High School's four small learning communities. This pathway has a three-year sequential curriculum in grades 10 through 12. The program offers a core academic curriculum and skill-based competency courses linked to the health care industry. The goal of the pathway is to provide students the opportunity to explore the content, responsibilities and possibilities of various careers in health care.

The Program
The School of Health Professions is divided into three consecutive levels. Beginning in the sophomore year and each subsequent year, in addition to a core academic curriculum consisting of English, Math, Science and History, students are required to register for a competency course. The competency courses serve as the connection between real world work-based experiences and classroom instruction. Each competency course allows students the opportunity for in-depth exploration and a more comprehensive understanding of all aspects of the healthcare industry. In competency classes, students engage in a variety of activities that are designed to prepare them for life beyond high school. This is true whether students choose higher education, military service, or employment. Students participate in activities such as career readiness workshops, job shadows, work-based rotations, internships and summer employment. During progression in the pathway, participants are introduced to basic health care occupations, learn medical skills and terminology, interact with a variety of health professionals, and learn how to qualify for their health care occupation of choice. Students seventeen or older can also qualify for a variety of certificate training programs such as: Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Recreation Therapy, and Medical Assistant. Junior year students are offered both Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid certifications.

Recruitment for the Pathways begins in the second semester of the freshman year. Approximately 66 students are selected from the application pool. Once selected, students usually matriculate in the pathway through graduation. Students are expected to earn at least a 2.5 GPA, maintain good attendance, and model good behavior and attitude.
