THEATER ARTS
Working within the framework of
the city and state benchmarks, the goal of theater arts curriculum at the JQS is
to teach the students confidence and joy in self expression and to nurture and
indulge their boundless creativity and imagination. Students will develop
an appreciation of the art and hard work behind creating performances. Students
study elements of performance including acting, puppetry and dance. They
also study the applied arts of theater including sewing, costume making, puppet
making. Students write original scripts and study poetry for classroom
performances. Students also bring their favorite books to life on stage in
school wide productions. Upon leaving the JQS, students will see two live
Shakespearean performances, both comedy and tragedy. The Fifth Grade Drama
Club gives motivated students the opportunity to fully stage their own classical
drama in the annual Evening of Shakespearean Mirth and Magic.
"How could any living
creature, like us people, live without drama? Theater Arts has inspired me to
put attitude to my work and it helps me to be creative. I love drama. It’s fun
to me because I get to show how I feel about things. When I am in drama, I feel
like a newer version of me. I know that life is filled with wonder and drama is
part of wonder, so drama is a part of life." Maggie
