JQS ROCK WALL

4/2007

The JQES climbing wall is finally in use. The wall is great for Phys. Ed. Mrs. Yee is glad that it is finally up and done. The wall was perfect and safe. There has been many rules added to the wall, like climbers must always be supervised while climbing, or don’t jump down, climb down. Sometimes the climber’s hand might get sweaty, so they might accidentally fall, but luckily there is a 2-inch mat on the floor to cushion a fall. This wall was a great addition to the gym.

Last year, we received a generous grant from the state called “Everybody Move” and we also managed to collect donations from 2006’s fifth grade class to build a traverse rock climbing wall in our gymnasium. It will be finished over April vacation. Everyone is excited and waiting for the wall to be finished. This 50-foot long wall takes strength, endurance, and teamwork to get across.

One benefit of this wall is that it builds, not just strength, but character and teamwork, too. People work together to get across the wall. It is a challenge, and it is fun. Even if you don’t make it over, you'll have a lot of fun trying. Hard work and trying your best is going to get you across.

To make the wall educational, there will be math, social studies, and other activities for the climbers to do while climbing. It helps the brain, just as much as it helps the muscles. Making this educational is really clever. Who knew we could also test the brain?

There will be various activities for the wall, such as Put-a-ball-on-a-cone, climb with a blindfold, or even climb with a backpack. The backpack builds strength for when the climber is on, the blindfold builds flexibility, and the Put-a ball-on-a-cone builds balance. These activities help kids become physically fit and feel more confident about themselves.

In the gym, safety always comes first no matter what. To ensure safety during the climb, there will be mats on the floor to cushion a fall. If you’re careful, you’ll be able to have fun and be safe!

There will be a big celebration for the finished climbing wall. The climbing wall is a perfect addition to Mrs. Yee's Physical Education class. Many thanks to our administrators, teachers, students, and Project Adventure for making this project possible. In just a short period time and with some patience, soon, the whole school will enjoy the new climbing wall!
