Helping My Child To Be Successful

Have lots of books available.

Read.  Read.  Read.  Have your child read to you.  Have your child read my him/herself.  Read to your child.  Try to read everyday.  Let your child see you reading.

Children need 9 to 12 hours of sleep each night to work at his/her best.  Children need enough sleep to fully function at his/her best.  Children need to go to bed early enough to get up on time for school.

Children need to eat nutritionally, especially at breakfast.  Make sure your child eats a good breakfast at home or at school.

Limit TV during the school week.  Children need time to get exercise and to do school work.

Provide a time and a place for your child to do his/her homework.  Have them do homework early.  Do not let them wait until it is late and he/she is too tired to work at his/her best.  Check his/her homework assignment book daily.

Be positive.  Tell your child what he/she is doing well.  If you want to help your child improve on something, tell him/her what he/she did well, tell him/her what to improve, and then tell him/her something good again.  Spend time with your child and get to know him/her.

Talk to your child.  Ask your child questions about school or about what he/she read.  Ask your child what he likes or dislikes.  Tell your child things about yourself.  Talk about a TV program or movie that he/she saw.  Communication teaches new vocabulary!
