The Parting Stone
The Parting Stone is
located in the middle of John Eliot Sq. It is an 18th century marker
known as the Parting Stone embedded at the fork of Roxbury
and Centre Street. On the front it reads The Parting Stone, on the
right, it says Cambridge and Watertown and on the left, it says Dedham.
This stone marked the division of the highways into two branches,
the Upper Post Road and the Middle Post Road. The engravements on
the sides tell you where the two roads will lead you to. This stone
played an essential role during early years when there weren't alot
of roads and every highway emerged from Boston. The Parting Stone
is the most distinctive of Dudleys stones, they are all marked
with his initials. Today it still sits in the square at the division
of the two roads.
