What is an Electronic Portfolio?

Electronic Portfolios are a free-form computer database designed to assist in assessments and student work samples. It will allow showcasing, assessing, and reporting on student's  work. Electronic Portfolios are also a reflective tool which demonstrates students academic growth over time. As we move to more standards-based performance assessment, we need alternative tools to record and organize evidence of successful teaching. One of the most exciting developments in the school reform movement is the use of alternative forms of assessment to evaluate student learning, and one of the most popular forms of authentic assessment is the use of portfolios.

Why a Student Portfolio?

Portfolios are useful tools for the assessment of students because they including examples of student work, they provide a richer and more authentic, realistic portrait of a student's abilities. They offer an opportunity for student self-reflection, which is arguably the only way students learn. They are a powerful way of communicating a student's performance to others. They supplement and improve instruction by providing much more detailed and useful feedback in the classroom about what a student has learned and where a student needs more help. The point of the portfolio (electronic or paper) is to provide a "richer picture" of a student's abilities, and to show growth over time.

Please read before entering.

In fairness to all the students whose works are so bravely and proudly displayed on this site, their works should not be looked upon as a critique of abilities. This has already been done as the assessment process but as a process to show "students' abilities and growth over time."
