Basics

Each Spring, Manning School students carry out science work on their own. This means (usually) doing science at home, using what we learned in the Manning Science Center.  The Expo is when students share this work at our own special convention.

The Expo takes place one afternoon in the cafeteria. Every student who has brought in a project that meets all the rules will participate. (This means they earned a grade of level 3 or level 4). Every participating student is a winner, and receives a small set of prizes. Students have time to move through the tables. The scientists explain their work to each other. The students have always taken this work very seriously, showing how much they understand about how science really works.

WHAT?? These home investigations are expected to be easy and fun. So easy that all students in grades 3 and up can meet all the rules without any help from a grownup. The only support they’ll need from you is to get the supplies and making available some space and time. They may also need some reminders from you to get the work done on time and done well. What comes in? The Poster!

The POSTER All the work will be presented on a poster – but our posters are small!!! They are small so we have room for everyone’s! The posters are about the size of two pieces of paper!!!

The QUESTION Since science is all about answering questions, the first thing decided is the question. Since this project emphasizes doing REAL science – your child will be doing science, not reading it. The question guides the student in deciding what to do.

Wondering if the question is a good one? Bring it in to me and I’ll talk with your child right away! We have some rules about the question – no questions about volcanoes, for example.

WHEN?? The work is to be brought in March, a couple of weeks before the actual Expo Convention. This gives us time to check over everyone’s work and to give everyone the opportunity to correct any problems so they may participate in the special event.)

WHO?? We want ALL students to participate, even those in Kindergarten. It is REQUIRED for all students in Grades 3, 4, and 5.

NEED MORE DETAILS?? More will be sent home, in February.
