Developmental Guidelines & Instructional
Program
The core of student learning will be
guided by the needs of the individual; curriculum will become more child-centered
and learning will be thematic and will alternate between large and small group
learning. Instruction will be grounded on the MA Guidelines for Early
Childhood Education and the recommendations from the National Association for
the Education of Young Children. Values and priorities identified by the school
community will be at the center of effective teaching at the ELC.

- K0 is a year in which children explore and experiment
with language arts, math, science and social studies.
This year is rich with experiences and lays the foundation
for the development of skills in these areas.
- K1 and K2 are years in which children continue to
experiment and begin to receive developmentally appropriate
instruction in reading, writing, and math toward meeting
Massachusetts Standards.
- Grade 1 is a year in which children receive formal
instruction and practice the skills required by the
Standards in each academic area which these students
must meet in order to be promoted to 2nd grade.

In preparation for the Baldwin Early Learning Center’s
first year as a pilot school and our expanded enrollment
we have developed a new leadership role at our school
called Coordinator of Early Childhood Instruction. This
coordinator will work in collaboration with the principal
and our teaching staff to further develop our school’s
ability to provide the highest quality of education
to our students. Her support of teaching staff through
the coordination and facilitation of “Looking
at Student’s Work Sessions”, Instructional
Leadership Meetings and weekly staff meetings will also
assist us in refining our educational instruction. She
will support our faculty in their effort to construct
a curriculum that is both responsive to children’s
interest and fosters each child’s cognitive, physical,
social and emotional development. She will also work
directly with classroom teams to design developmentally
appropriate room arrangements with enhanced learning
centers that ignite a child’s curiosity and facilitate
learning.
