Walk into a Baldwin ELC classroom and see a small group of children
and a parent volunteer talking around a table covered with books and sketches
of the local neighborhood. The teacher, who is recording the conversation, joins
in to talk about the process for using the sketches to make a classroom mural.
Other children are engaged in block building to simulate the construction of the
mural. A student teacher is sharing a book with several children sprawled out
on the floor in the small corner library. The rest of the children are creating
props at the writing and computer centers. These props include “specials
of the day”, appropriate to the local pizza parlor they have recreated in
the classroom dramatic play center. Another teacher moves from group to group,
conferencing with children about their work goals and progress.
A group of teachers from a local school is quietly observing the
process of engagement and learning at the Baldwin ELC. Outside the classroom are
documentation panels with photos of children on a recent field trip, complete
with text based on discussions, as well as several drawings of children representing
their first efforts to create a map of the local neighborhood. A hand letter sign
next to the maps declares,” work in progress!”

| Our Instructional Focus |
| The Early Learning Center's focus is providing developmentally
appropriate instruction. We provide all our students the opportunity to enrich
their spoken and written language. Children engage in activities enhancing talking,
listening, writing, and reading within our developmentally appropriate curriculum.
This curriculum provides the necessary foundation for our children to become eager
and competent readers and writers.
Our language and literacy development focus is the vehicle by
which we expand the ELC students' knowledge of numeracy, science, and social studies.
Our approach reflects not only the expertise and experiences of the teachers and
paraprofessionals, but also the findings from the best available research on how
children develop language and literacy. |

| Whole School Improvement Process |
Consistent with Boston Public Schools policy, the Baldwin ELC is committed
to making progress in each of the six essentials of whole school improvement.
These essentials are: 1) continuing to fine-tune our instructional practices in
a collaborative school climate to improve student learning; 2) looking at student-work
and data in each academic area in order to improve instruction; 3) developing
a professional development plan that continues to enhance student achievement
and improve instruction; 4) sharing leadership to sustain instructional improvement;
5) aligning resources to improve instruction and student learning; 6) increasing
parent and community involvement and enhancing our school community environment.
