SMART Goal #3: Family and Community Engagement

SMART Goal #3 as defined by Boston Public Schools, addresses implementation of Essential 6 of the Whole School Improvement Plan: Involving Parents and the Community in the Citywide Learning Standards and Assesments. It includes a response to the recommendations of "The Family and Community Engagement Task Force Report".

Our Current Situation: The Agassiz currently has one Parent Liaison who will be in charge of the standing committee to support the development and implementation of the Family Engagement plans. A volunteer from the Boston Partners in Education will also provide guidance and support to the committee and to the school staff in the development and implementations of the plans. She will also work with the Title I Parent Resource Center to provide school personnel with rained aimed at improving communication between the school and the home.

Our Parent Liaison is working closely with the City Wide Parent Council's liaison to the school, to invigorate the SPC, which has been non-existent for the past three years. It is our hope that out of that group we will be able to have members join the School Site Council and the ILT.

We know that we must provide a variety of ways to connect parents to the school. The standard flyer and occasional calls to attend a meeting, not mater how important we feel it is, is not enough. We feel that this new committee will generate ideas that are either , tried and true, new to us or ones that we need to try again.

It is our feeling that the Agassiz is a welcoming school to our parents and other family members. We need to identify why we think so, where is the data to support this feeling?

Our SMART Goal states the following:

1. Starting in November 2000 (after the School Parent Council elections), the Agassiz School will have an active SPC that meets on a monthly basis.

2. By November 2000, all teachers will have been trained on ways to better communicate and engage our students' families.

3. By November 2000, the Agassiz will have developed classroom and school family engagement plans with specific objectives. (See pg. 11 of Family Engagement Task Force Report).

4. By November 2000, the Agassiz will have a standing committee made up of parents, teachers and outside volunteers to support and oversee the implementation of the above mentioned plans.
