SMART Goal #1: Whole School Improvement

SMART Goal #1 as defined by Boston Public Schools, addresses the area of Whole School Improvement. In the 2000/2001 school year this goal involves the implementation of the core components of literacy instruction and the BPS Mathematics plan.

Literacy Instruction

Our Current Situation: The Agassiz School is in its 4th year of implementing the Success For All literacy program. There are two Implementation Reports during the year. They indicate progress in the implementation of the model for each component level (Kindergarten (Early Learning), Gr. 1 (Roots) and Grs. 2-5 (Wings)) and for each aspect of the literacy model within each component.

The second report from SY'00 gave us the following information: Areas where implementation was at Level 0: 0%, areas where implementation was at Level 1: >1%, areas where implementation was at Level 2: 76% and areas where unplementation was at Level 3: 18%.

Detailed information comparing progress in implementaion of the SFA program in 3/15/99 and 3/2/00 is shown below.

The Reading Wings and Alas Levels of the Agassiz SFA literacy program, (monolingual and bilingual students reading at the second through sixth grade levels) demonstrated the following percentage of implementation of core elements from 3/2/99 - 3/15/00:

The Reading Roots and Lee Conmigos Levels of the Agassiz SFA literacy program, (monolingual and bilingual students in the beginning reading program) demonstrated the following percentage of implementation of core elements from 3/2/99 - 3/15/00:

The Early Learning and Aprendizaje Iniciel Levels of the Agassiz SFA literacy program, (monolingual and bilingual students in the prekindergarten and kindergarten reading program) demonstrated the following percentage of implementation of core elements from 3/2/99 - 3/15/00:

Our SMART Goal states that by June 2001, the Agassiz School Success For All Implemention Report will indicate that 40% of the areas of implementation will be scored at level 3 (150% - Exceptional Implementation) generally and in each of the three grade level components (Early Learning, Roots and Wings). In light of the progress made in the implementation of the SFA program in the past year, we feel it is a realistic and attainable goal for 40% of all areas to reach the level of exceptional implementation (Level 3 - 150%) by June 2001.

Action Steps in Achieving this Goal

1. Review March 2, 2000 implementation Report and determne which items, per component level, would most easily be improved. Determine teaching strategies to each SMART goal.

  • Responsible Personnel: SFA Facilitator, Principal, SFA teachers
  • Dates/Timeline: October, 2000

2. Provide an SFA Self Assessment form to all teachers. The Self-Assessment is directly tied to the implementation of the model.

  • Responsible Personnel: SFA Facilitator and SFA teachers
  • Dates/Timeline: October, 2000

3. Monitor Progress towards goal during component level meetings that align with 8-week assessments.

  • Responsible Personnel: SFA Facilitator, Principal, SFA teachers
  • Dates/Timeline: Nov, Jan, Mar, May

4. Monitor individual teachers progress in light of Self-Assessment information.

  • Responsible Personnel: SFA Facilitator and SFA teachers
  • Dates/Timeline: Once a month

Mathematics Plan

Current Situation: The Agassiz School is a Level II Math Plan school. The Math Leadership Team (MLT) is represented by one teacher from each grade level, by the Math Specialist and the Principal. The teachers in the MLT will be implementing TERC fully in their classrooms and acting as models for their grade level peers. There are 34 homeroom teachers in the school. Dr. Mahesh Sharma has been contracted to provide training to all teachers. This training (to deepen teachers' understanding of mathematics) will parallel the one given to the MLT and support the implementation of TERC Investigations..

Our SMART Goal states that by June 2001, 50 % of all classroom teachers will have implemented one or more TERC Investigation Units.

Action Steps in Achieving this Goal

1. MLT members will be trained in TERC Investigations.

  • Responsible Personnel: BPS Math Department
  • Dates/Timeline: Fall, 2000

2. MLT members will be trained in Developing Mathematical Ideas.

  • Responsible Personnel: BPS Math Department
  • Dates/Timeline: Winter, 2000

3. Mahesh Sharma' s training of school staff. Bi-weekly sessions.

  • Responsible Personnel: Dr. Mahesh Sharma, Math Leadership Tteam
  • Dates/Timeline: October, 2000 - May, 2001

4. Recruitment of teachers to implement one TERC unit.

  • Responsible Personnel: Math Leadership Tteam
  • Dates/Timeline: January, 2001

5. 10 teachers to begin implementation.

  • Responsible Personnel: Math Leadership Tteam
  • Dates/Timeline: February, 2001 - June, 2001

6. Grade level assigned administrators will make observations of classes implementing a TERC unit.
