What are SMART Goals?

SMART Goals are developed by and for students, teachers, classrooms, grade levels , schools and school districts. The term S.M.A.R.T. is an acronym for goals which are:

 

Specific

The goals are spelled out clearly and deal with one area at a time.

Measurable

The success at reaching these goals can be measured.

Attainable

They are goals which CAN be achieved within that period of time.

Relevant

They are goals which are relevant to learning.

Timely

They are goals which speak to the needs the school or individual teacher or child has now.

Guidelines for SMART Goals for the 2000/2001 school year have been outlined by Boston Public Schools as shown below. Using these guidelines, schools developed their SMART Goals collaboratively with each school's Instructional Leadership Team (ILT). The goals were shared publicly with parents and staff.
