Guidelines for Using the Agassiz Elementary School
Library Media Center
Faculty and Staff
It is our goal to create within the new Library Media Center an atmosphere of tranquillity and scholarship, in which our resources can be used for education, reading and research. To attain this goal, we are requesting the following.
- When writing a pass for a student to the Library Media Center, clearly note your complete name and the student’s name and date, time, and the period and the educational purpose of the visit. The student will be expected to stay the entire period unless your note clearly states otherwise.
- When entering the Library Media Center the students must sign the attendance book in presence of the Library Media Center staff. Student must present a valid pass and be prepared to read, study, research or do assignments in a quiet manner.
- Students may not be sent to the library for disciplinary reasons. The library may not be used for housing students who are disrupting a class or who arrive late to class.
- Teachers may make an appointment to bring classes to the Library Media Center for orientation and to do research, reading, and book selection. Appointment must be made at least 24 hours in advance. Teachers are expected to arrive with the class and enter together in a quiet manner. There should be an educational purpose and/or the project being researched should be on file at the time of the appointment.
- Teachers must stay with their class the entire time of the visit to ensure that their class maintains a quiet decorum appropriate for a library environment, unless otherwise agreed with the librarian or assistant. In addition, they are responsible for leaving the library in its original condition. This requirement includes returning furniture, books, and materials to their proper locations and providing general clean up. If checking out materials will be part of this visit, the teacher should plan sufficient time so that all such activity can be completed before the period is over.
- Library staff will not write late passes if the student has failed to complete his work during the allotted time.
- In accordance with Boston Public School policy, students wishing to use the INTERNET must have an AUP (Acceptable Use Policy) document on file in the Library Media Center. Forms are available at the Library Media Center. Although a student may have an AUP on file with his computer teacher BPS regulations require the Library Media Center to have one on file as well.
- Computers are to be used for research and software programs loaded by the school on the computers. Students when signing in may request to use a computer and if one is available, the student will be assigned to a specific station. Students may not lead on any game or software program. Computers may not be used for e-mail, chat rooms, game playing or browsing non-educational web sites.
- Students and teachers are advised to buy a new floppy disk and save all their work to the disk.
- Faculty and staff are encouraged to utilize all the resources and materials in the Library Media Center. However, it is important that the adult population of the school lead by example in demonstrating that the library should be a place of peace and quiet. Therefore if adults need to have discussions and socialization with colleagues they should make a reservation for using the teachers’ lounge areas in the building for this purpose.
- Teachers are encouraged to use all audio-visual equipment available in the Media Center. However, it is reminded that the equipment should be reserved with a 48 hours advanced notice. Also, teachers must return their equipment on their due date in order to fulfill other teachers requests as well. Under no circumstances teachers should share any of the audio-visual equipment without prior/proper authorization from a Library Media Center staff. Remember that if something happens to a piece of equipment while signed out under your name – it will be your responsibility.
- Naturally, food, beverages, candy, snacks, gums, feet on the furniture, and loudness is prohibited.
- Failure to abide by these guidelines will result in the loss of Library Media Center privileges.
