Patrick Lyndon Pilot School

Welcome to the school year, and Middle School Science at the Patrick Lyndon Pilot School! I am looking forward to an exciting new year for Science at the Middle School! This page will provide a brief introduction to the major points concerning Science for the 7th grade. Some of the primary areas of interest that are mentioned below are Topics of Study, Grading, Special Topics, and Communication. Please find these topics addressed below.

Science Topics of Study

The topics of study for middle school science at The Lyndon School address the Massachusetts State Frameworks for study of Science. The Frameworks can be viewed on the internet at the D.O.E.’s web-site, at the following address: http://www.doe.mass.edu/frameworks/scitech/2001/0501.pdf. The Lyndon Science curriculum also addresses Boston Public School Standards, which are currently being realigned to the State Frameworks. The major topics of study for the 7th grade are:

bulletEarth Science Life Science Physical Science Technology/Engineering
bulletEarth History Diversity Of Life Properties Of Matter Materials, Tools, Machines
bulletEngineering Design

While studying these topics, mastery of the use of tools and experimentation in scientific inquiry will be pursued. Process skills are fully integrated into the learning process, and the scientific method is used during experimentation (such as for the Science Fair). Please fine attached the sequence of topics being addressed throughout the year in 7th grade Science.

Grading

Each student’s Science Grade will be calculated from the combination of three major areas, each weighted equally. (note: the grading system will change for the duration of the entire 2nd quarter)

bulletIn Class 33⅓ %
bullet    In Class is composed of three equally weighted parts
bullet    Written Work
bullet    Effort and Participation
bullet    Conduct
bulletHomework 33⅓ %
bulletTest/Quiz/Qztn 33⅓ %

Special Topics

The Middle School Science Fair is late January/early February (end of 2nd Quarter)!

The Science page of the Lyndon web site will contain this information, as well as links to exciting web sites related to topics of study!

Each student should have a 3 ringed binder (approx. 1.5 in. thick), with 5 sections: Notes/Projects, Science Fair, Test/Quiz/Quiztion, Homework, and Vocabulary.

Communication

The first page of the Homework section in each student’s Science binder is a "Homework Check-List," which indicates all assigned homework, as well as the grade earned for each assignment. I will be sending home frequent updates about both the class in general and your student’s progress. Also, I will call the homes of many students throughout the year, but please feel free to call me at any point that you have a question or comment at school (617-635-6336).
