Philosophy of Special Education The Special Education Program at the Patrick Lyndon Pilot School promotes principles which value and respect the right of its students with disabilities to experience positive personal and academic growth, and to fully participate in society. Every student has a right to fully access the curriculum, standards, be challenged, and be given opportunities to maximize his or her learning and analytical thinking skills. Also it emphasizes that collaboration and constant communication among the community, families of children with special needs, their educators and service providers serve as a catalyst for their general development. Student Goals Students will learn to utilize compensatory strategies that will enable them to participate fully in their academic development. Students will use technology to support their academic achievement. Students will develop social skills. Students will increase self-esteem and confidence as learners. Students will be active members of the school community. Whole School Goals Teachers will have high expectations for all learners. Teachers will work together to ensure the successful integration of all learners. Teachers will use a variety of instructional strategies to support all learners. Special Education Program Description The program focuses on developing and enhancing mathematics, reading, writing, and learning strategies utilizing a variety of instructional methods to meet the varying needs of all students. The program includes academic resource rooms and self-contained classrooms. Classroom assistants are in every self-contained classroom. Additional support services for students include speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and vision and mobility therapy. |
