At the Lyndon Pilot School, all teachers strive to help all learners reach their academic potential. Reading Specialists and classroom teachers assess all children in literacy at the Patrick Lyndon Pilot School as part of the instruction process. Those students that are not yet meeting academic performance standards in reading receive small group instruction during the school day in addition to the primary instruction they receive in the classroom by their classroom teacher. Small group literacy instruction strives to support and improve reading skills and strategies, and promotes critical thinking and problem solving skills. Literacy Support at the Lyndon Pilot School is designed to help ensure that all children meet challenging academic standards and develop their self-concept as learners.

Informal reading assessments are used to find an individual child’s current level of performance in reading. A child may receive small group literacy instruction in the following areas:

decoding and word attack skills

reading comprehension

phrasing and fluency

If a child is not meeting the reading benchmark, parents/guardians are notified by the teacher and/or through written notification. Children are assessed throughout the year to monitor their progress and make instructional decisions.
